Chievo Verona

Last updated: Sat 18 August 2018 20:18
In Brief

After a troubled summer, Chievo Verona begin new season with tough home clash against Juventus. Defeated Pescara 1-0 in the Coppa Italia. Cesar will miss out.

Looking Back

Chievo Verona summer was not an easy one as they seriously risked being relegated due to some financial misdemeanours. They will be tried in September for such issues and so will be able to start in the new Serie A.

Because of their troubles, they could not be very active during the transfer campaign: some of the departed players were not properly replaced.

Their preseason was not a positive one as, after beating Rappresentativa Val di Pejo (13-0), Rappresentativa top 22 Calcio Veronese (4-0), Virtus Verona (2-0) and Cittadella (1-0), they lost to Napoli (2-0) and were destroyed by Hoffenheim (5-0).

They already began their campaign officially as they succeeded eliminating Pescara from the Coppa Italia with a second half goal by Rigoni.

Looking Ahead

Chievo Verona start their new Serie A campaign with the toughest match ever: they will be hosting Ronaldo's Juventus. Any positive result would be more than welcome.

Cesar is set to spend some time out due to injury.

Bani, Rossettini and Tomovic are all contending for two places in the heart of the defence and Stepinski should be preferred to Djordjevic in the attack. Obi is contending with Depaoli and Rigoni for a place in the midfield.

Points of Interest

Chievo Verona hosted Juventus 15 times so far: they won only once and drew 3, while losing 11. On the whole, they scored 9 goals and conceded 27.

Juventus

In Brief

Begin life without Buffon but with CR7. Aiming at first win of the season against Chievo Verona on the road. Spinazzola will be unavailable. Benatia overcame a slight doubt. De Sciglio also has problems and will not play.

Looking Back

Had a glorious summer as they managed to make the transfer coup of the century, with Cristiano Ronaldo signing from Real Madrid. And Bonucci surprisingly returned after a short stint at Milan. Lost Higuain and Buffon, though.

Their preseason was not one to be remembered: they beat Bayern Munich (2-0) and Benfica (5-3 following penalty shootout) but lost to MLS All Stars (6-4 following penalty shootout) and, most remarkably, Real Madrid (3-1). Then, they had the usual friendly against Juventus B (5-0).

Looking Ahead

Juventus aim at starting their new season with an away win over Chievo Verona.

Spinazzola is recovering from a knee injury and he is set to spend a couple more months out. Benatia has shrugged off some fatigue. De Sciglio has muscular problems and failed to make the 21-man squad.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri is considering adopting a 4-2-3-1 formation instead of a 4-3-3.

Can is contending with Khedira and Matuidi for a place in the middle of the park. Douglas Costa should be preferred to Mandzukic among the starters. Cuadrado could represent an alternative to Bernardeschi on the wing.

In a 4-3-3 formation, Khedira would prevail over Bernardeschi among the starters.

Marchisio was released.

Points of Interest

It was January 2010 when Juventus lost their sole trip to Chievo Verona. Since then, they drew once and won all the other 5 games.
