In Brief

Obtained a precious 2-1 win over Tunisia at the last assault. Kane scored both goals. Aiming at sealing qualification to knockout stage with win over Panama. Alli should not play.

Looking Back

England played a great first half against Tunisia as they immediately took the lead and kept creating several scoring chances. Having been reached to a draw due to a dubious penalty kick, they closed the half-time attacking. After the break, they failed to be as bright and dangerous as earlier on and they eventually managed to score a winner just well into injury time.

Kane has already proved all his value, scoring a fundamental brace against the African side. Walker was pretty naive causing the penalty kick which allowed Tunisia to equalise.

Looking Ahead

Thanks to their success over Tunisia, England could already seal their qualification to the knockout stage of the competition with a win over Panama.

Alli seems to have fully recovered after picking up a thigh injury against Tunisia. It looks like he won't be risked and is not expected to take part. Loftus-Cheek should thus replace him in the middle of the park. Otherwise, Dier could also be considered.

Walker is one yellow card away from ban.

Coach Southgate sustained a shoulder injury.

Sterling didn't play the best of games against Tunisia, missing an open goal. There was a theory he would be replaced by Rashford from the off. The latter impressed when coming on in the second half against the African side. At this point it looks like Sterling will start.

Vardy could represent an alternative to Kane up-front.

Points of Interest

This is the first time ever England and Panama meet.

Panama

In Brief

Worked hard on their World Cup debut, but still suffered bad defeat and remain heavy underdogs in the group. Could be hard to break if allowed to maintain defensive shape. Unchanged starting XI from first game. Important midfielder A. Quintero sidelined.

Looking Back

Panama’s World Cup debut saw the players a bit overeager against Belgium, which worked during a goalless first half, but the amount of yellow cards conceded and the evident difference in class between the sides eventually saw Panama losing 0:3.

Used many heavy tackles in this first game and several players walked tight rope for long periods.

Late in the match showed some attacking potential on counterattack and probably deserved to score a goal.

Looking Ahead

Coach Gomez used 4-1-4-1 formation vs. Belgium and he will stick to the same shape. It must be said that all of the three inner midfielders in this system are instructed to drop very deep and for long periods Panama might be actually defending with three or even four centre-backs.

Quintero, essential during the qualifiers, is missing the tournament injured and youngster Rodriguez made his competitive debut vs. Belgium at left wing. He did well and a day before the game it became clear that the coach plans to use the same starting line-up.

Points of Interest

Struggle for goals and have found the back of the net just once in their six matches played in 2018, the first five of those were friendlies. That said back in November held Wales to a 1:1 draw in Cardiff.
