Ajax

In Brief

A penalty almost in injury time gave them 1-0 away win over VVV Venlo. Aiming at a win at home to Dynamo Kyiv. Veltman and Bande should be unavailable. Sinkgraven, Cerny and Dolberg all doubtful. Neres a new injury concern. Siem De Jong could quit for Australia.

Looking Back

Ajax created plenty of scoring chances during the first half of the away match against VVV Venlo. Unfortunately for them, though, they lacked whatever effectiveness. Things got more complicated after the break as the home side became even tighter at the back. This way, Ajax tried mostly with long-distance shots, while giving the way to some counter-attacks. A penalty kick almost in injury time gave them the final success.

Ziyech and Tadic tried to create offensively but, despite their continuous efforts, sometimes it looked as if they did not play with the rest of the team.

Looking Ahead

After getting rid of Sturm Graz, with a 2-0 home and 3-1 away wins, and of Standard Liege, with a 2-2 away draw and a 3-0 home success, in the qualifying rounds, Ajax await a tough clash against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League playoffs. A win without conceding is highly needed in front of their supporters.

Veltman will be unavailable. Bande should also be missing out. Sinkgraven, Cerny and Dolberg are all working on their recovery for this one. In particular, Dolberg resumed partial training with the group. Neres sustained a hamstring injury at the weekend and he was ruled out.

Tagliafico is one yellow card away from ban.

Siem De Jong could be loaned out to Sydney FC.

Labyad could be acting as Neres's replacement among the starters. However, Donny Van de Beek could also be considered with Ziyech advanced to the wing.

Points of Interest

Ajax already met Dynamo Kyiv once, in the 2010/2011 Champions League playoffs, and they managed to eliminate the Ukranian side. In front of their supporters, they obtained a 2-1 win.

Dynamo Kyiv

Last updated: Thu 23 August 2018 05:56
In Brief

Enjoying very impressive start to the season – 6 wins and 1 draw in all competitions. Also conceded just 1 goal in these 7 matches. Having new main striker, plus several Brazilians joined this summer. Nykola Sheparenko and Vladislav Supriaga sidelined. Denis Garmash passed fit.

Looking Back

Dynamo already played one qualifying round in the competition, they beat Slavia Prague 3:1 on aggregate after following a 1:1 away draw with convincing 2:0 home success. In fact the goal conceded in Prague is the only one Dynamo allowed in so far this season.

Domestically they opened the campaign with a nice 1:0 win over arch-rivals Shakhtar in the Super Cup and followed that with four consecutive league wins without conceding. The last one a 1:0 home success over Oleksandria on Saturday.

Looking Ahead

Coach Khatskevich relies on his solid back line, plus he likes to use the wings a lot. Verbic scored in both legs vs. Slavia Prague, while Tsygankov developed into a key player last season and he already has 2 goals and 5 assists to his name this campaign.

From the three summer arrivals from Brazil only Tche Tche is playing regularly at the minute, while the departures of Moraes and Mbokani means that Besedin is the only experienced centre forward in the squad.

Big money were paid for the 18-year-old Supriaga, seen as the next main striker of the team, but the youngster nurses an injury for several weeks and together with Sheparenko he is set to miss this trip. Experienced Garmash carries a knock, but he was able to recover on time and will travel with the group.

Points of Interest

Looking to stop six-game winless run on the road in the Champions League (4 draws and 2 defeats), with their last away success in this competition way back in 2015.
