In Brief

Winning this competition is the major goal this season. Enjoying very good start to their domestic campaign – 4 wins and 1 draw. Claudio Bravo, Danilo, Eliaquim Mangala and Kevin De Bruyne sidelined. Benjamin Mendy major doubt, but Sergio Aguero passed fit. Guardiola serving touchline ban.

Looking Back

City reached the semi-finals and the quarterfinals in their last two Champions League campaigns, but after breaking all kinds of domestic records last season now all the Sky Blues think about is making it to the big final in Europe come next May.

On Saturday the Citizens achieved an easy 3:0 home win vs. Fulham, with the outcome of this match decided very early on and allowing the players to cruise past the hour mark.

City opened the defence of their Premier League title with 4 wins and a draw, with their three home matches bringing them 11 goals, 87 shot attempts and three wins.

Looking Ahead

Coach Guardiola will be serving a touchline ban, but this is unlikely to have any impact on the display with all the modern communication technology available these days.

Changes are certain as usual when it comes to City and the rotation policy suggests that now Mendy, Stones, Kompany, Gundogan, Mahrez and Jesus are likely to be amongst the starters after not being used from the off on Saturday.

Bravo, Mangala and De Bruyne are the long-term absentees. Danilo has been out since the World Cup and despite training again he won’t be involved as early as Tuesday. Aguero hurt his ankle vs. Fulham, but it proved nothing serious and he is ready to play. Mendy is a much more serious doubt and he is unlikely to feature.

Points of Interest

Last season won all of their first 5 Champions League games, but from December onwards suffered 4 defeats in 5.

In Brief

Lyon held by Caen at the weekend. Ligue 1 form has been disappointing. Marcal and Gouri are both sidelined.

Looking Back

Lyon played out a 2-2 draw against Caen at the weekend, securing a share of the points in the penultimate minute when left-back Benjamin Mendy was set up by Memphis Depay to score. Nabil Fekir had earlier opened the scoring on his longest appearance of the season to date.

OL have been thoroughly unconvincing in Ligue 1 thus far. From their five matches, they have suffered only one defeat but equally they have managed to win only one game.

Looking Ahead

Lyon are still missing Marcal and Amine Gouiri, though neither would have been seriously fighting to start in this encounter.

Former Manchester City player Jason Denayer is set to make his Champions League debut for Lyon against the club he moved from only a few weeks ago.

Fekir has yet to find his top level after taking part in the World Cup with France. A lack of game time has meant that he comes into this game somewhat rusty but will surely be given a starting berth along with former Manchester United player Memphis Depay, who was left out from the start at the weekend, with Moussa Dembele starting instead.

Points of Interest

Lyon have won five matches previously against English sides, while they have lost six. Meanwhile, they have drawn on seven occasions.
