Napoli

In Brief

Lost 3-1 to Juventus on the road despite early lead. A must-not-lose against Liverpool at home ahead of them. Younes ineligible and injured. Meret, Chiriches and Ghoulam should be missing out.

Looking Back

Napoli adopted an enterprising attitude against Juventus on the road and this worked out for the first half hour, as they managed to take the lead and to create more dangers. However, it did not last long as the home side succeeded equalising and then overturning the result in the second half. Having remained with one man down, they tried fighting back but had no sufficient energies.

As it often happens, Allan was the last man to give up fighting: he also set up the initial goal for Napoli. Mertens scored once but eventually had some problems becoming dangerous again. Hysaj had some troubles all along the match. Mario Rui picked up a useless second yellow card which cost them dear. Hamsik presented his opponents with too many balls lost.

Looking Ahead

Having lost the second game of their season, Napoli are now 6 points away from Juventus.

In the Group C, Napoli were held to a scoreless draw by Red Star Belgrade in week 1 and they are now expected by a must-not-lose at home to Liverpool.

Younes is ineligible to play.

The longtime injured Meret, Chiriches and Ghoulam should still be missing out.

Milik should be preferred to Mertens in the attack. Fabian could be acting in the middle of the park, instead of Hamsik or Diawara, or on the right flank of the midfield, instead of Callejon. Zielinski should be preferred to Verdi on the left flank of the midfield.

As an alternative, Ancelotti is considering a back three with Maksimovic among the starters and Hysaj on the bench.

Points of Interest

Napoli hosted Liverpool only once: they were held to a scoreless draw in occasion of a Europa League fixture in October 2010.

Liverpool

In Brief

Beating PSG in the opening round puts them in great spot, but must avoid defeat now. Lost the top spot in the Premier League at the weekend. Oxlade-Chamberlain long-term absentee. Adam Lallana also set to miss.

Looking Back

Liverpool opened their 2018/19 season with historic run of seven consecutive wins, which included their dramatic 3:2 home success over PSG in the opening round of this competition. The Reds were not hugely impressive in that game and they threw away a two-goal lead, but in stoppage-time Firmino scored to give them precious three points.

Since then Liverpool lost their winning touch. Last Wednesday they were beaten 1:2 at home by Chelsea in a domestic cup match, plus at the weekend they needed another last-minute goal just to save a 1:1 draw in a league clash vs. Chelsea. As a result of these dropped points the Reds also lost the top spot in England on goal difference.

Looking Ahead

Coach Klopp knows that another win now would practically put his team on the driving seat for the rest of this group and the German won’t be afraid to use aggressive tactics. Sturridge could start again, he was used from the off against PSG and also came off the bench at the weekend to save the draw, which might see Mane demoted to the bench.

Lallana has been struggling with injuries recently and he won't travel, while Oxlade-Chamberlain remains in rehabilitation until next spring. Origi and Solanke also carried knocks last week, but both boarded the plane to Italy.

Points of Interest

Van Dijk played through pain and with the help of injections at the weekend and now he might not be used from the off.
