Borussia Dortmund

In Brief

Pulled off an incredible comeback at the weekend. Omer Toprak, Jeremy Toljan and Sebastian Rode injured. Shinji Kagawa added this week as well. Mario Götze listed as ill last time out. Lukas Piszczek a doubt.

Looking Back

Borussia Dortmund came back from two goals down at half time to beat Bayer Leverkusen 4 - 2 at the weekend.

Dortmund head into this match with just 2 wins in their last 12 Champions League outings, one of those came on match day 1 when they beat Club Brugge.

Marco Reus was on the scoresheet last weekend and has now found the net 4 times in the league along with 4 assists. Winger Jadon Sancho has 5 assists already this season despite only playing 124 minutes of league football.

Looking Ahead

A handful of players are out injured, although only centre back Omer Toprak will really be missed that much. Sebastian Rode and Jeremy Toljan who also miss out are at best back up options.

Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa is also unavailable for this match after suffering a knock in training that keeps him out.

Creative midfielder Mario Götze is a doubt after he was listed as ill for the last two matches, though there are rumours it is simply due to his poor performances that he is missing out.

Lukasz Piszczek had a muscle strain at the weekend and was unable to make the squad. However teenager Achraf Hakimi did well in his place and it would not be an issue if he were to start here.

Points of Interest

Dortmund lost both of their matches against Monaco in the 2016/2017 season when the French side made a run to the semi finals. Lucien Favre has his own history against the side from the principality as he twice beat them at home with Nice in the last two seasons.

Monaco

In Brief

Monaco beaten in Saint-Etienne Friday. Only one win in 10 matches. Rony Lopes, Pierre-Gabriel both out. Jovetic and Pellegri to follow.

Looking Back

Monaco’s miserable form continued on Friday night as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Saint-Etienne away from home. It was a game in which Leonardo Jardim’s side did not play too badly, but Radamel Falcao was wasteful in front of goal, ending any chance of them picking up a point.

Jardim might be heartened by his side’s performance in their first Champions League match of the season, although they lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid. That was perhaps their best performance of the campaign to date as they showed an attitude that has not been evident in the league.

Monaco have played 10 competitive matches so far this season and have won only one – a 3-1 road victory against Nantes. Conversely, Monaco have lost six times already.

Looking Ahead

This match will come too soon for Rony Lopes, who has started running again, while Ronael Pierre-Gabriel is also closing in on fitness but will not be ready for Germany. Stevan Jovetic has been training lightly but he is also sidelined along with Pietro Pellegri.

Monaco moved to a 3-5-2 formation on Friday, with Jardim trying everything to try to get his team moving again. More experienced players such as Aleksandr Golovin and Nacer Chadli will expect to be recalled for this encounter after being benched at the weekend.

Danijel Subasic is fit but has not been involved amid rumours of a fall out with coaching staff.

Points of Interest

Monaco won in Dortmund two years ago as they moved to the semi-finals of the Champions League – but they have no Kylian Mbappe this time around.
