In Brief

Ajax had an easy 4-0 away win against SC Heerenveen. They need a win at home against Benfica. Veltman, Sinkgraven, and Bande should be out. Tagliafico and Mazraoui should be fine. Cerny's conditions to be verified.

Looking Back

Ajax played a rather comfortable away game against SC Heerenveen despite some absences. In fact, they took the lead almost immediately, thus setting the game off on the right direction. The home side tried a reaction but they had not problems controlling and eventually struck again before the break. In the second half, they scored twice more and even hit the bar once.

Onana made some precious saves during the first half. Huntelaar did not score when he came on but the managed to hit the bar.

Looking Ahead

Having won their last three domestic league fixtures, Ajax keep tailing PSV Eindhoven 5 points away from the Eredivisie leaders.

Ajax are the surprising leaders in the Group E as they easily beat AEK Athens at home and took a fundamental draw from their trip to Bayern Munich. A success against Benfica would be decisive for their ambitions.

Veltman, Sinkgraven, and Bande should not be available. Ziyech and Eiting all overcome their problems and made the squad against SC Heerenveen. Tagliafico and Mazraoui (groin) are expected to be fit. Cerny is doubtful.

Despite his good performances, Wober should give the way to Blind in the heart of the defence. Tadic could be starting in the attack with Neres sitting on the bench.

Points of Interest

Ajax have hosted Benfica 3 times in the European Cup in their golden era: they lost once (1-3), in February 1969, but redeemed themselves a few weeks later in what was a quarter-finals decider (3-0 AET). Then, they won a semi-final first leg (1-0) in April 1972.

In Brief

Benfica are coming from the crucial win in the "classico" against Porto that made them regain the leadership in the Liga. In the Taça de Portugal they easily defeated Sertanense. Now a difficult and important game in Amsterdam. Lema, Ebuehi and Krovinovic out. Grimaldo and Jardel recovered. Samaris inelegible. Fejsa a last second doubt.

Looking Back

The Encarnados are coming from a reassuring victory against Porto, even if beyond the result there was little to rejoice in a very poor game, played in a very conservative way by both sides, many fouls and few clear scoring chances.

A goal in the second half by Seferovic was enough for the team of Rui Vitoria to snatch an important win. Thanks to these three points they reached Braga on top of the table.

In theTaça de Portugal Placard third round Benfica defeated 0-3 Sertanense (a third division side).

Looking Ahead

Next Tuesday's clash in Amsterdam is probably the most important for the Aguias considering that Ajax are probably the direct rival to get the second position (assuming that Bayern win the group). At the moment, with one defeat and one win Benfica are in 3rd position, only one point behind Bayern and Ajax.

Defender Tyronne Ebuehi is dealing with serious knee injury and ruled out. Midfielder Filip Krovinovic is recovering from a knee injury, but not available yet. In the last training session defender Cristian Lema sustained a thigh muscle strain.

Defender Jardel, out in the last month for a thigh muscle strain, is now available. Left full-back Grimaldo also recovered from a left thigh muscle trauma.

Defender Ruben Dias, sent-off in Athens, will serve one round of ban. Samaris isn't in the official CL list.

Rui Vitoria called-up also young defender Ferro, captain of Benfica B.

Midfielder Ljubomir Fejsa didn't take part to this morning's warm-up for a problem to the left foot, his conditions will be verified just before the match.

Points of Interest

Benfica and Ajax met already 5 times in European competitions, the Portugueses won 1 time, drew 1 and were defeated 3. Overall they scored 4 goals and conceded 8.
