In Brief

Heavy 5-1 home win over Empoli. A must-not-lose at home against Paris Saint Germain. Younes ineligible. Verdi and Chiriches should be out. Meret and Ghoulam also absent. Luperto returns.

Looking Back

Having immediately taken the lead at home against Empoli, Napoli failed to kill the match off and they found themselves put under heavy pressure by the visitors. However, they managed to score again before the break. The Tuscan side re-opened the game early on in the second half and they came close to equalising. Once Napoli scored again, though, the match finished as they hit the back of the net twice more.

Mertens playted an outstanding match, scoring a hat-trick and serving an assist. Insigne opened the score and he was present in all Napoli offensive initiatives. Koulibaly stopped all that he possibly could once Empoli made their main offensive effort. Both Fabian and Rog failed to impress in this occasion, ending up subbed off in the second half.

Looking Ahead

Napoli continue their march in the second standing of the Serie A. They hope in a Juventus fall in order to reduce the gap from the leaders.

Napoli are currently sitting on the second place of the Group C, 1 point below Liverpool and 1 point above Paris Saint Germain. They cannot afford any wrong moves against the French side.

Younes is ineligible.

Chiriches and Verdi should still be unavailable because of injuries. Meret and Ghoulam will also be unavailable. Luperto sat the last games out and he is back with the 21-man squad.

Mario Rui is one yellow card away from suspension.

Maksimovic should be preferred to Hysaj at right-back with Mario Rui at left-back. Callejon and Fabian should be acting on the flanks of the midfield.

Points of Interest

Napoli hosted Paris Saint Germain only once, in October 1992, in a UEFA Cup fixture and they lost 2-0.

Paris St Germain

In Brief

PSG overcame Lille at the weekend. Under pressure in Europe. Dani Alves and Kurzawa out. Kimpembe is available again.

Looking Back

Paris Saint-Germain recorded as 12th successive win at the start of the Ligue 1 season – a record in Europe’s big five leagues – as they defeated Lille 2-1 on Friday. Head coach Thomas Tuchel said it was their best performance of the season, although it was the first time they’d won a league fixture by only one goal.

The runaway Ligue 1 leaders are under some pressure in the Champions League, having earned only four points from their first three games. They were forced to fight back from behind twice against Napoli in Paris, with Angel Di Maria’s late leveller salvaging a vital point for them.

Looking Ahead

Dani Alves and Layvin Kurzawa are slowly making their way back towards first-team football after injury issues. Colin Dagba is also laid up for the French club.

Former Napoli striker Edinson Cavani has been struggling with a knock of late and was not involved at the weekend. He has, however, travelled with the squad and is expected to start.

Dramatic changes from the side that was deployed on Friday are not anticipated, though Presnel Kimpembe returns from a three-match domestic suspension and an operation on his wisdom teeth to push for a place in the panel.

Adrien Rabiot was the one notable omission in the team against Lille, with the central midfielder given only the final seconds of the game. Julian Draxler played the central role well alongside Verratti but will probably drop out of the starting XI.

Points of Interest

Di Maria, who signed a new contract with PSG last weekend, is their leading scorer in 2018 with 24 goals, surpassing even Neymar and the in-form Mbappe.
