In Brief

Awful moment for Benfica coming from 3 defeats in a row, the last one on Friday against Morerirense who won at the da Luz 1-3. Now in Champions League they are awaited by a crucial clash with Ajax. Ebuehi long time injured. Lema also out. Krovinovic and Seferovic recovered. Samaris ineligible.

Looking Back

While understanding the poor moment of the Aguias, no one could have expected the defeat against Moreirense, a team who had never won at the da Luz stadium. The most worrying thing, however, was the way the defeat came, Benfica looked a team with neither heart nor ideas, totally unable to react despite the long time available for the comeback.

Yet the Encarnados had the best possible start scoring after only 120 seconds...just a flash in the pan as the guests equalized after only 3 minutes. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Verdes e Brancos who scored two more goals. In the second 45 minutes was expected a vehement reaction by Benfica...it never arrived, just few unconvincing attempts and too many horizontal passes.

Looking Ahead

Third consecutive defeat for the team of Rui Vitoria, second in the Liga where they lost the leadership. Not the best moment to face a crucial match in Champions League, but they can no longer afford to make mistakes...if they lose with Ajax and Bayern win, they are already out of the competition.

Defender Tyronne Ebuehi is dealing with a serious knee injury and ruled out. Last week defender Cristian Lema sustained a thigh muscle strain and should be therefore unavailable.

Swiss forward Haris Seferovic just recovered from a thigh muscle injury as well as midfielder Filip Krovinovic who is back after a long time. Samaris isn't in the official CL list. Yuri not called-up.

Points of Interest

Benfica and Ajax met already 6 times in European competitions, the Portugueses won 1 time, drew 1 and were defeated 4. Overall they scored 4 goals and conceded 9.

In Brief

Two first-half goals gave Ajax 2-0 win over Willem II at home. In need of a positive result from trip to Benfica. Veltman, Sinkgraven and Bande should be out. Eiting also absent. Dolberg in the squad.

Looking Back

At home against Willem II, Ajax had the easiest of life as they started attacking, and being dangerous, right from the beginning. It did not take long before taking the lead and scoring again. After that, they went on attacking and creating dangers. In the second half Willem II tried some reaction but it was Ajax who came close to scoring again and again.

Dolberg and De Jong scored one goal each, being assisted by Neres and Tagliafico respectively. Neres and Ziyech failed to score despite trying several times.

Looking Ahead

Thanks to their success over Willem II, Ajax continue their march behind PSV in the Eredivisie. They are 5 points below the league leaders.

Ajax are the current leaders of the Group E with 7 points. In order to keep Benfica at bay, they need to return from Portugal with a positive result.

Veltman, Sinkgraven and Bande will still be missing out. Eiting sat the last game out and he will still be unavailable. Tadic is fine, having recovered in time for the weekend. Dolberg travelled with the 21-man squad after suffering from illness.

Tagliafico is one yellow card away from suspension.

Tadic should act as the cemtre-forward with Ziyech and Neres as the wingers. De Beek will make it back to the middle of the park and so Dolberg is set for a place on the bench.

Points of Interest

Ajax hold a positive record away against Benfica: they won 3-1 in February 1969 in a Champions League quarterfinals fixture and drew 0-0 in the Champions League semifinals in April 1972.
