Red Star Belgrade

In Brief

Red Star are coming from a 2:0 win over Proleter. Fell to heavy defeats at PSG and Liverpool but held Napoli to a goalless draw in their sole previous home game. Vujadin Savic, Milan Rodic and Marko Marin return. Richmond Boakye is doubtful.

Looking Back

Red Star are coming from a routine domestic league win over Proleter, as they maintained their lead at the top of the Serbian Super League.

The Serbian champions are going through their first-ever Champions League group stage campaign. They started off with a respectable goalless home draw with Napoli, but suffered heavy defeats against both PSG and Liverpool away.

Red Star were never expected to have a real chance of making it out of the group when the draw was made. Their goal remains to produce respectable displays, while any point collect will be seen as a bonus.

Looking Ahead

Vujadin Savic, Milan Rodic and Marko Marin all missed the game at Anfield with injuries but are all now available for selection.

Richmond Boakye has missed the Proleter match with an injury and it remains to be seen if the former Juventus man will feature now.

Points of Interest

Red Star have lost only one home European game under Vladan Milojevic, who took over in summer 2017. That defeat came against Liverpool's Premier League rivals Arsenal, who handed them a 1:0 defeat in an Europa League group stage game last season. However, their last three European home games all ended in draws (Trnava, Salzburg, Napoli).

Liverpool

In Brief

Comfortably beat Crvena Zvezda at home and now looking for a needed double in this tough group. Signs of slowing down – just 3 wins in last 8 games in all competitions. Oxlade-Chamberlain long-term absentee. Xherdan Shaqiri, Nathaniel Clyne and Jordan Henderson also missing. Dejan Lovren and Naby Keita passed fit.

Looking Back

Liverpool cruised to an easy 4:0 home win against the Serbians a fortnight ago, but they know that now in Belgrade they will face hostile atmosphere and much more compact hosts. Can’t afford mistakes though as the 3 heavy hitters in this group are currently congested within 2 points.

On Saturday Liverpool dropped precious points in the Premier League when pulled back to a 1:1 draw on their visit to Arsenal, which was third draw in their last four league outings and also extended the shaky run since mid-September that saw the Reds winning only 3 of their last 8 games.

Looking Ahead

Coach Klopp will almost certainly use heavy rotation for this match and at least 7-8 changes compared to the squad that played on Saturday can be expected. Sturridge should get another chance to lead the attack from the off, with Lallana, Moreno and Matip just some of the other fringe players eager to impress.

Lovren and Keita passed late fitness tests, but both Henderson and Clyne are ruled out, the latter is sick. Shaqiri won’t ravel due to his Albanian roots and the expected tension between him and the Serbian fans. Oxlade-Chamberlain continues rehabilitation.

Points of Interest

Liverpool are showing vastly improved defending this season and they are yet to concede more than 1 goal in an away game in 2018/19.
