Highlights

Fiorentina ended their long wait for a win as they came from behind to beat Empoli 3-1 at Stadio Artemio Franchi. Rade Krunic gave the visitors the lead against the run of play but Kevin Mirallas equalised just before half-time. The Viola took over in the second period with goals from Giovanni Simeone and Bryan Dabo sealing a deserved success.

Detail

These two local rivals appeared to be moving in opposite directions. Fiorentina were without a win in eight matches whilst Empoli were unbeaten in their last four with three wins. It was a bright start to the game from both sides though.

The hosts wasted a glorious chance to take the lead when Vitor Hugo planted a completely free header wide from close range and they were immediately punished. It was a lovely break as Luca Antonelli played in Francesco Caputo down the left and the striker's low cross was converted by Krunic.

Given their recent troubles, the Viola fans may have feared the worst but their sides responded really well and crucially got back on terms before half-time. Mirallas got his first goal for the club with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Sassuolo last time out and the Belgian levelled things up here too as he slammed home Simeone's through-ball.

The goal just before the break swung the momentum in the favour of the hosts and they got their noses in front for the first time just before the hour. Cristiano Biraghi's deflected cross went perfectly into the path of Simeone who nodded it in from close range.

In a role reversal from the first half, Empoli failed to take a huge chance when Caputo was denied at point-blank range by Alban Lafont. Just moments later, it was 3-1 instead as substitute Dabo drove forward and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.

Summary

It's massive relief for Fiorentina and Stefano Pioli who can finally put that dreadful winless run behind them. Their character was tested when they went a goal behind but they responded admirably to turn the game around. Empoli again played some nice football and had the lead but they were well beaten in the second half. It's their first defeat in five Serie A matches.
