Game Report

Highlights

A stunning long range strike by Wayne Rooney helped DC United return to winning ways as they overcame Orlando City's challenge with a narrow 1-0 win

Detail

After an early chance for Jansson from a corner, United quickly took control of the match with Segura, Canouse and Rooney all finding themselves in promising positions but were unable to hit the target

All that changed on the 10-minute mark though when a failed counter attack by Orlando ended with the ball falling at the feet of Rooney well inside his own half and the England striker saw Brian Rowe out of his position before letting loose a brilliant long range strike that bounced into the net

Orlando tried to come up with a response but were largely limited to long range efforts for majority of the first half while at the other end Rowe cam up with a sharp save to deny Rooney from a freekick before Brillant somehow failed to hit the target from inside the six-yard box following a corner

Both the teams continued to attack after the break but were struggling to get their shots beyond the keeper while Akindele was denied an equalizer on the hour mark with Jara blocking his effort from inside the six-yard box

Segura looked to have doubled the advantage for United midway through the second half but the effort was ruled out for offside following video review though with Orlando unable to come up with a goal, one was enough for the hosts to end the game with all three points

Summary

United did deserve the victory with the hosts slightly edging the game in terms of chances created though there is still work needed to be done on the offense for both the teams who struggled to make an impact in the final third
