Game Report

Highlights

Derby secured a place in the play-offs as they won 3-1 at home to West Brom. Martyn Waghorn gave them the lead but Stefan Johansen levelled. Things got nervy before Mason Bennett's goal and a Harry Wilson penalty won it for the Rams. West Brom, who have the potential to meet Derby in the play-off final, had the blow of Hal Robson-Kanu sent off late on.

Detail

Derby captain Richard Keogh declared himself fit to play. West Brom were expected to rest several players ahead of the play-offs but their side appeared arguably the strongest possible with Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez both starting.

A play-off place was in Derby's hands and they ensured nerves were eased when Waghorn headed in from Jayden Bogle's cross. Waghorn was to go off injured before the end of the half in a blow to Derby.

Gayle and Rodriguez had disappointed first halves as West Brom put Derby's defence under pressure, both missing good chances.

The game got interested as Johansen levelled with a superb curling shot.

Derby upped the tempo and there was only ever going to be one winner with so much riding on it for Rams. Bennett scored from close range before Wilson scored a penalty after Kyle Bartley fouled Tom Lawrence.

Sub Robson-Kanu lashed out at Bradley Johnson in injury time to complete a bad day for West Brom.

Summary

Albion will be furious that Robson-Kanu will now miss the play-offs due to suspension. This was not a great day for them. Derby will be delighted to progress to the play-offs. It has not been a perfect season but they suddenly have a promotion chance.
