Game Report

Highlights

Aston Villa won on penalties as they got the better of a West Brom side who gave everything. Albion appeared in control of the tie thanks to Craig Dawson's only goal of the night, levelling the aggregate scores. Chris Brunt was sent off 10 minutes towards the end of normal time and that changed the game and despite holding out, West Brom went on to lose on penalties with Jed Steer the hero for Villa.

Detail

Conor Hourihane replaced Glenn Whelan for Villa while Jacob Murphy came in for West Brom in place of the suspended Dwight Gayle, who turned out being a big miss.

It was a fine first 80 minutes for West Brom. They deservedly levelled as Mason Holgate's long throws caused problems and Dawson headed home from one.

Villa were not in the contest at all and it took a daft sending off for Brunt, who received a second booking for a foul on John McGinn, to turn the tide.

Villa had one good chance to win it as Sam Johnstone made a wonder save to deny Albert Adomah. But West Brom defended superbly with Ahmed Hegazi, Dawson and Kyle Bartley all outstanding to limit chances as they defended deeply.

Villa went on to win on penalties thanks to two saves from Jed Steer for the first two kicks from Holgate and Hegazi. West Brom were short of penalty-taking options while Villa had more experience even bringing on a specialist as a late sub in Ahmed Hegazi.

Summary

Villa will be delighted but they did not play too well in this and know they will need to perform better to win the final. West Brom gave everything but the sending off proved to be too big an obstacle.
