Game Report

Highlights

Derby became the first side ever to progress to the Championship play-off final having lost the home leg first as they won 4-2 at Leeds in a memorable night. It was one of the all time great games as Leeds went 1-0 up through Stuart Dallas only for goals from Jack Marriott, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson turned it around. Dallas levelled the aggregate scores before Gaetano Berardi was dismissed. Marriott scored the winner before Scott Malone's late sending off for Derby.

Detail

Depleted Leeds were without Kemar Roofe and Adam Forshaw while an unfit Pontus Jansson made the bench. Derby were without Dave Nugent and Martyn Waghorn so Mason Bennett started.

Leeds appeared to have put the tie beyond Derby as Dallas scored after a free kick hit the post. Frank Lampard went for broke bringing on Marriott for Duane Holmes before the break.

That sub worked emphatically as Derby went for broke for the rest of the match. They levelled just before the break as Marriott scored with his first touch after an horrendous misunderstanding by Kiko Casilla and Liam Cooper. The pair, especially the goalkeeper, severely lacked confidence after that.

Derby built on that as Mount scored within seconds of the restart and they were ahead on aggregate when Bennett had his shirt pulled by Cooper and Wilson scored the penalty.

Dallas' curler put Leeds back level on aggregate but they then had Berardi red carded for a second bookable offence for a foul on Bradley Johnson. Marriott capitalised with the winner in a move that owed much to Richard Keogh's forward run. Malone was sent off late on for a foul on Pablo Hernandez, earning a second yellow.

Summary

A brilliant game. Leeds ran out of steam and it was Lampard's brave call that changed the match with Marriott impressing. Derby are a side full of confidence now.
