Game Report

Highlights

Sunderland claimed a share of the spoils after snatching a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Wycombe Wanderers at the Stadium of Light. The visitors had slightly the better of the first half and took the lead midway the second when loan striker Fred Onyedinma drilled a left-foot shot into the roof of the net. The Black Cats rescued a point with six minutes remaining when substitute Josh Maja fired home following good work from midfielder George Honeyman.

Detail

Sunderland went into the game on the back of an eight-match winning run in all competitions and made the early running with winger Aiden McGeady bursting into the box from the left before fizzing a shot over the crossbar. The visitors named goalkeeper Matt Ingram between the sticks after returning on a 7-day emergency loan from Queens Park Rangers and he made his first save from midfielder Lynden Gooch's long-range shot after 20 minutes.

Defender Adam El-Abd wasted a good chance to put the Chairboys in front just past the half-hour when he failed to get enough power on his header from full-back Joe Jacobson's corner before Onyedinma fired into the side-netting soon afterwards. They finished the first-half on the front foot with defender Sido Jombati hitting a volley high into the stands before McGeady side-footed wide at the other end after running on to striker Jerome Sinclair's flick-on.

The second half saw the home side increase the pressure, winning a succession of corners, but were unable to test Ingram before the visitors shocked their hosts in the 67th minute when Jacobson's free-kick wasn't cleared and Onyedinma drove a shot into the roof of the net, giving home goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin no chance. The hosts levelled in the 84th minute when Honeyman got the better of Jacobson and his low cross was turned home by Maja.

Sunderland went into search of a late winner and El-Abd did well to clear a cross from McGeady before substitute Max Power hit a powerful drive from 20 yards which Ingram pushed around the post for a corner in injury-time.

Summary

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth was delighted with the performance from his side as they claimed a deserved point. Sunderland boss Jack Ross admitted it had been a frustrating afternoon for his side.
