Game Report

Highlights

Chuks Aneke and Kieran Agard scored second-half goals, as MK Dons overcame Macclesfield with a 2:0 scoreline to move to the top of the League Two table for the first time this season. It was a game in which the Dons had the better of things from start to finish, but fine goalkeeping by Kieran O'Hara frustrated them in the first half in which they also had two goals disallowed. However, the Dons went on to strike twice in the opening twenty minutes of the second half and, with the visitors lacking a Plan B, there was always only one winner after that.

Detail

The Dons were on the front foot from the kick-off but their early chances saw Baily Cargill strike a team mate after a corner and Kieran Agard being denied by a last-ditch block.

Further chances fell to eventual scorers Aneke and Agard, but they were both off target with their efforts. The visitors nearly grabbed the lead out of the blue through Ben Stephens, but he was unable to keep his effort on target after latching onto a stray pass.

The hosts intensified the pressure in the final twenty minutes of the half, but had two goals disallowed and were frustrated by O'Hara's goalkeeping, as the opening forty five ended goalless.

The deadlock was broken six minutes after the side change through Aneke, who scored with a superb curler from the edge of the area.

The lead was doubled through Agard, who beat the offside trap and latched onto a through ball by Alex Gilbey before scoring with a composed finish.

The one-way traffic continued in the remainder of the game. The Dons saw several chances to score a third come and go but their misses did not matter, as the visitors never threatened a leveler.

Summary

It was a workmanlike display by Paul Tisdale's men. They were up against a side that clearly came to the MK Stadium with a plan to frustrate them but they found a way through and their boss will be pleased. On the other side, it was yet more misery for Macclesfield, who continue to struggle down the wrong end of the table and are showing no signs of being able to escape their current predicament.
