Game Report

Highlights

Ayr and Morton fought out a goalless draw at Somerset Park. Morton had two good chances in the first half but failed to take them. Ayr were getting on top in the second half until their striker, Craig Moore, was sent off for violent conduct. Gary Oliver hit the post for Morton, but Ayr preserved a point with some determined defending.

Detail

Ayr brought in Andy Geggan and Declan McDaid. Geggan was at right-back again with Liam Smith switching to left-back. Morton made one change as they included Charlie Telfer. Connor Bell made the bench for the first time since the early part of the season.

Ayr were keen to make amends for their previous draw at home and began at a high tempo. However, they were guilty of releasing the ball too quickly and bypassing their midfield. Morton's defence looked comfortable as they coped with the long-ball tactics from their hosts.

Morton became more of a threat towards the end of the first half and had good chances to take the lead. Gary Oliver latched onto a poor pass and was through on goal but Ross Doohan blocked his shot. Bob McHugh was also put through on goal but he dragged his finish wide from a promising position.

Ayr raised their game at the start of the second half and tested Derek Gaston with a series of shots that he dealt with comfortably. The game swung in Morton's favour after an hour with the dismissal of Craig Moore for kicking out at Gregor Buchanan.

Morton took advantage of their extra man and Oliver hit the post with an angled shot. Ayr offered little in attack and near the end a clearance off the line from Michael Moffat prevented Morton from gaining a win. Overall, the draw was a fair result.

Summary

After appearing so strong in recent weeks, Ayr have dropped four points with consecutive draws at home. They will regret this as it was an obvious chance for them to open a significant gap at the top of the table. Morton recovered from their embarrassing defeat to Alloa with a stuffy performance at Ayr. It demonstrates how unpredictable they are at the moment.
