Game Report

Highlights

Atalanta boosted their Champions League aspirations with a famous win at Anfield. Much changed and lacklustre Liverpool conceded twice in quick succession via second half goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens.

Detail

Jurgen Klopp made several changes to his starting 11 - most notably in defence. His backline looked shaky early on - Neco Williams dispossessed in his own half and lucky to see Alejandro Gomez fire his finish wide.

Liverpool also uninspired in attack despite having Sadio Mané and the returning Mohamed Salah in the line-up. The Egyptian had their only real chance at the end of the first half but skied his finish over the bar.

Atalanta had been the better side - with Papu Gomez constantly looking to pull the strings. The Argentine popped up on the left flank and whipped in an excellent cross which Ilicic converted on the stretch.

Klopp reacted immediately to falling a goal behind by making no less than four substitutions. Andy Robertson, Fabinho, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino all came on but it would be in vain.

The Italian side notched a quick second goal with Gomez again instrumental - along with both wingbacks. Another fine ball to the back-post where Hans Hateboer nodded across for Gosens to volley in.

Summary

Liverpool's inexperienced backline were punished but they also failed to have a shot on target - despite having some of their main attackers on. Atalanta took their chances in the second half and fully deserved the win.
