Game Report

Highlights

Brave Chievo couldn't hold the champions to a draw as Frederico Bernardeschi scored deep in injury time for a 3-2 Juventus win. Sami Khedira's early goal gave Juventus the perfect start, but Mariuz Stepinski and Emanuele Giaccherini scored for Chievo. An own goal from Mattia Bani levelled the scores for Juventus until Bernardeschi scored the dramatic winner.

Detail

Chievo accommodated Tomovic at right-back with Rossettini and Bani also in their back four. Stepinski led the attack with Obi only making the bench. The defending champions had Ronaldo making his debut as a lone striker. Cancelo was preferred to Barzagli at left-back. Matuidi and Mandzukic only made the bench.

The opening minutes suggested this was a potential champions versus relegation candidates as Juventus took the game to the home team and scored within three minutes. Giorgio Chiellini set up Sami Khedira to score from close range. The opening quarter saw complete Juventus domination

Despite completely dominating the game, Juventus couldn't fashion another goal with Ronaldo, Cuadrado and Costa all shooting wide. Minutes before the interval, Chievo were suddenly back on level terms with their first serious attack of the game. Mariusz Stepinski met a cross and looped a header over Wojciech Szczesny and into the net. It remained 1-1 at the break.

Juventus started the second half intent on restoring their superiority with Ronaldo seeing his drive stopped by the legs of Stefano Sorrentino. However, the game turned on its head as Juventus conceded a penalty with Joao Cancelo the culprit. Former Juventus player, Emanuele Giaccherini, stepped up to give Chievo an unlikely lead.

Sorrentino was having a great game and denied Ronaldo a debut goal. However, Juventus were pressing hard and soon equalised. With Leonardo Bonicci bearing down on goal, Mattia Bani could only put the ball in his own net.

The closing minutes saw Mandzukic's attempt ruled out by VAR with Sorrentino left groggy and then substituted. Juventus were not to be denied and in injury time Frederico Bernardeschi stabbed in the winner.

Summary

Ronaldo's Juventus debut was overshadowed by other events in this thrilling game. The Bianconeri showed the resolve of champions to stay calm and grind out a win. Chievo are fully expected to struggle this season but this fighting performance should give them hope. If they can sustain this level of performance then relegation worries can be dismissed.
