Game Report

Highlights

Juventus made it two wins out of two in Serie A with a fairly routine 2-0 home victory over Lazio in Turin. Miralem Pjanic opened the scoring with a stunning strike on the half-hour mark and Mario Mandzukic sealed the points late on after an unorthodox assist from Cristiano Ronaldo on his home debut.

Detail

Juventus edged past Chievo in their opening Serie A game and they'd be hoping to put on a better performance in front of their home supporters but it was a slightly tentative start from the champions. Pjanic sloppily gave the ball away to Ciro Immobile on the edge of his own box and the striker teed up Senad Lulic for a drive which Wojciech Szczesny had to palm behind for a corner.

The Bianconeri soon started to find their feet and began dominating the game. They went close twice in quick succession with home debutant Ronaldo involved. The Portuguese forward just failed to get a touch on Blaise Matuidi's cushioned pass before Sami Khedira struck the post. Ronaldo then just missed Federico Bernardeschi's cross which Thomas Strakosha turned around the post.

The pressure eventually paid off for the home side and they broke the deadlock with half an hour played. Wallace Santos' defensive header went straight to Pjanic and he cut across the ball with a wonderful half-volley which flew into the far corner.

Juventus started the second half rather sloppily too as Giorgio Chiellini came out of defence but presented the ball straight to Lucas Leiva. It lead to a Lazio counter-attack and Luis Alberto curled a decent shot just wide of the mark.

Ronaldo seemed desperate to get his first goal in the black and white of the Old Lady but it just wasn't his day in that department. Strakosha tipped his fierce long range effort over the bar and then got a touch on Joao Cancelo's cross which took the ball slightly behind Ronaldo was he was waiting to tap into an empty net. The Portuguese's touch turned into an assist for Mandzukic who fired home to kill the game.

Summary

Juventus ran out fairly comfortable winners in the end and didn't have to reach top gear to claim the three points. It's an ominous sign for the rest of the league that the champions are into a winning stride already. Lazio would have expected to have put up much more of a fight on the day and Simone Inzaghi wasn't pleased with his team's performance. They've had a nightmare couple of fixtures to start the season and the manager will be hoping the next game represents the real beginning of their campaign.
