Game Report

Highlights

Arsenal continued their winning run as they beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium but it was far from a comfortable afternoon for Unai Emery's men. The Toffees had the better chances for almost an hour, with Petr Cech forced into a number of saves but two goals in the space of a few short minutes from the potent Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the Gunners in control. Everton were left aggrieved as Aubameyang's goal was clearly offside.

Detail

Arsenal were on a run of four wins in all competitions and this was a fixture they had an excellent record in but they struggled to get going for much of the first half. As expected, they had most of the ball but looked shaky with it in defence and lacked penetration in attack. Nacho Monreal had their only effort on target in the first half, forcing a superb reaction save from Jordan Pickford at point-blank range.

It was Everton who were the far more dangerous side in the opening period and they could have been a few goals ahead if not for Cech. The veteran goalkeeper was off his line quickly to make smothering saves at the feet of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Theo Walcott who both got in behind the home defence. Cech also kept out Richarlison and Lucas Digne from longer range.

There was a lot more aggression and purpose about Arsenal at the start of the second half. Lucas Torreira, making his first Premier League start, typified that as he was continuously putting in tackles in the centre of the park. The Uruguayan won the ball back well and played it into Aaron Ramsey who teed up Lacazette and the French striker curled an emphatic finish in off the post.

The goal lifted the Emirates and the Gunners added a second just moments later but there was huge controversy surrounding it. Mesut Ozil got clear down the right and tried to square to Ramsey who appeared to slip but he still managed to flick the ball into the path of Aubameyang who finished it off. The Gabon striker scored a goal on his debut for the club against Everton that was clearly offside and history repeated itself here as this one should have been chalked off too.

The Toffees would have felt hard done by over the offside decision but they continued to show fight in the closing stages. Unfortunately for them, it seemed that Cech was determined to keep a clean sheet as he made a fine reaction save to keep out Michael Keane's header at close range and also denied substitute Cenk Tosun.

Summary

It was far from convincing again from Arsenal but the results don't lie and that's five wins on the bounce in all competitions since those two tough opening fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea. They rode their luck at times and the fact that Cech was the man of the match tells its own story but they have forwards at the top end of the pitch who can always make the difference. Everton would kill for the kind of strikers the Gunners have as they lack a truly lethal number 9 to compliment their other talented forwards like Richarlison and Walcott. They had enough chances at the Emirates to at least get a draw but failed to take them.
