Stadium | Opened in 1998, the Estadio Municipal de Butarque is the home of Leganés and it is the perfect size for them, with a capacity of 12,000. They’ve little by little increased the capacity and added hospitality sections since their promotion to LaLiga in 2016 and this ground is now one of the nicest ones in LaLiga for fans to visit. It is essentially laid out in the shape of an oval, but without any running track. This makes for a good atmosphere, especially because this ground is often full. Situated at the top of a hill, it can get windy on occasion. |
Recent History | Leganés are enjoying the greatest years in their entire history. They’d never been in LaLiga until they won promotion to the top flight in 2016. Before that, they’d rarely even been in the second tier as they were in the lower regional leagues for most of their existence. That changed under Asier Garitano as the coach led them to the top tier and they’ve been there ever since, even if Garitano moved on in 2018. Although they’ve usually been fighting towards the bottom of the LaLiga table, they have so far been able to end up avoiding relegation and they even went on a spectacular cup run in 2017/18 when they reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals by knocking out Real Madrid in the process. This club is doing a lot of good things off the pitch too. Led by female president María Victoria Pavón, they have an excellent marketing and communications team and have won awards for some of their fun and family-friendly initiatives. |
