Game Report

Highlights

Newcastle answered their critics with a resolute performance to shut out and shock Spurs. Joelinton's first half goal proved to be enough to secure the Magpies a famous victory in London.

Detail

Tottenham toiled for much of the first half - struggling to penetrate the visitors' robust five man defence. Heung-Min Son had their only decent effort on goal which was saved by Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle looked the more dangerous side when they went forward and took advantage of a wide open home defence for the first goal. Christian Atsu found the gap and Joelinton collected his pass in acres of space to score.

The home side continued to struggle for inspiration in the final third. Even when they did create chances, their finishing was poor - Lucas Moura in particular wasted a couple of glorious openings in each half.

The Magpies kept their shape well throughout - with their midfield working hard across the pitch to protect the defence. Steve Bruce appeared to have summoned the defensive solidity from last season under Rafa Benitez.

Spurs brought on Giovani Lo Celso for his debut and he created a dangerous moment when he slipped the ball through for Harry Kane. The England striker went down under a challenge from Jamaal Lascelles but VAR ruled no penalty.

Summary

A tame and toothless Tottenham performance - only two shots on target tells their story and they can have few complaints about the result. Credit must go to Newcastle who shackled the Spurs attackers and ground out the victory.
