Football Season Review

Champions: Red Bull Salzburg

Salzburg have had a rather turbulent first half of the season but an excellent second half, with the end result being what we are used to, as they claimed their fourth consecutive domestic double after easily winning the league and beating Rapid in the Austrian Cup final. In fact, the Red Bulls were within a minute of having the best season in history of the club, as they missed out on a place in the group stage of the Champions League after conceding a late-minute equalizer against Dinamo Zagreb in their Play-off clash, with the Croatians then going on to win in extra-time and progress to the group stage. Salzburg then also ended up failing to make the group stage of the Europa League and were also struggling domestically, with both Sturm and Altach being ahead of them. However, Oscar Garcia eventually managed to steady the ship, with his side being near the top of the table at the end of the autumn season and then going on to enjoy a nearly perfect spring season and easily win the domestic title. With Jonathan Soriano departing midway through the season to continue his career in China, the Red Bulls no longer have any players that they are truly dependent on. A part of the reason for this is the fact that their owners, the Red Bull corporation, now see RB Leipzig as their main project, with the Red Bulls losing numerous key players to the German side over the last two years, such as Marcel Sabitzer, Naby Keita and, more recently, Dayot Upamecano. Despite no longer being their owners' darlings, Salzburg still have far too resources for other Austrian sides to compete with and it is difficult to imagine their domestic dominance end any time soon.
