Football Season Review

№12: Eupen

Eupen eventually can look back on a pretty good season where they have made encouraging progress, staying well clear of any relegation worries, unlike last year. Claude Makelele's men actually started the season pretty poorly and lost the opening four games by conceding 16 goals in them. Yet, the team soon started to gain some traction and a few good wins gave them confidence and structure, with the manager finding the right balance. The dance was very solid and consistent as the veteran Siebe Blondelle and youngster Rocky Bushiri mixed well, while up front Yuta Toyokawa was pretty reliable and impressive. A good run of three wis in four games in December and January proved the one that pretty much secured safety and for the rest of the season the team played with almost no real pressure on their shoulders. The standards dropped as a result and the team earned just four points in the final eight games of the regular season. The play-offs were nothing to shout about as well as the team suffered a few losses to pretty low opponents and never really seemed motivated to challenge for the top spot in the group. Makelele has a solid and established team but not too many of them will be still with the team next season and retiring Spaniard Luis Garcia will be especially difficult to replace.

Player of the Season: Yuta Toyokawa
