Football Season Review

№9: Fulham

Fulham enjoyed a stable campaign under Martin Jol this season and managed to get their second highest point tally in the Premier League. The campaign started early for the Cottagers who entered the Europa League in June and they coasted past four different opponents before starting the Premier League with good match practice. That did not show though as they had a pretty slow start of the season and did not win any of their first six games in the league. They ended the drought in style by beating local rivals QPR 6:0 and also claimed good results away at Arsenal and at home to Liverpool. However, the team never really challenged for the top six and looked well-placed in mid-table. It was more interesting in their Europa League group where they looked set to progress to the next stage of the competition but conceded a dramatic equaliser at home to Odense and drew 2:2 which knocked them out. They needed a bit of time to recover from that blow but when they were on song, they were a great team to watch and managed to beat Arsenal after coming from behind and then obliterated Newcastle 5:2 as well. Clint Dempsey was really coming to the fore with his goalscoring touch while Pavel Pogrebnyak enjoyed a great start of his Fulham career after joining in as a replacement for Bobby Zamora. Moussa Dembele looked impressive in midfield too and overall Fulham looked like a very decent side who could have challenged for the European places had they started the season better. They finished the season pretty well and lost just one in seven games before the last round of fixtures. All in all, they had a pretty decent campaign with a lot of attacking flair on show but may struggle to keep hold of Dembele and Dempsey in the summer.
