Football Season Review

№23: Histon

Histon finish the season bottom of the table, just as everyone expected at the start of the season, as a youthful squad found the challenge too big to handle. Experienced John Beck was given the tough task of keeping the Stutes up in the summer as the majority of the squad departed due to the lack of funds. The manager had to use youngsters and players signed after a trial to assemble a squad and indeed the start was good, a 3:1 win at home to Barrow. However, Beck left the club just two weeks later due to disagreements with the board and former Brighton and Millwall player David Livermore was given his first shot in management. He had a real job in his hands but got about the task admirably and the Stutes were doing as well as they could be expected given the quality of the squad. They had a real good run of three wins on the trot in early October but then a losing run followed and overall the feature of that team was the lack of maturity and consistency. Livermore was trying to make the young players gel and play the ball on the ground while the experienced forwards Antonio Murray and Omer Riza were expected to chip in with the goals. Histon had the odd good moment but were at times found out and lost 6:1 at home to Grimsby in early 2011. Soon a five-point deduction followed and suddenly the Stutes were cut adrift at the foot of the table. However, the manager refused to give up and generated his side's best run of form in late January and early February. Impressive wins against Fleetwood and Altrincham gave them real hope but within a few weeks the players ran out of steam as local rivals Cambridge inflicted them a damaging 2:0 defeat at home. From then on, Histon lost every game but the last one as they players lacked the character to stand up the challenges and left Livermore pulling his hair in frustration time and time again. Histon deserve credit for playing football in the right manner but they just did not have the personnel to stand a chance. Livermore is staying up though and will try to build a young squad that will be competitive next season.
