Football Season Review

№2: Southampton

Southampton had only one objective this season, which was to clinch automatic promotion. That was duly achieved thanks to a superb run in the latter part of the campaign which saw them win their last six games and take 18 points from a possible 21 during the run in. Huddersfield pushed them all the way, but the Saints secured 2nd place with one game to spare thanks to their excellent goal difference, which was actually better than champions Brighton, who finished only three points ahead. Things did not start well for the club, with just one win in their opening seven league matches. Manager Alan Pardew paid the price and was sacked, although he soon picked up the Newcastle job, with Nigel Adkins replacing him. Adkins was unable to change the squad much, but he inherited the strongest set of players in League 1 by some distance and set about getting performances befitting of such. His penchant for a high-tempo passing game was pleasing on the eye, but his ability to get results was much more satisfying for Saints fans, and they were soon climbing the table. Although Brighton were by then running away with the title, no side was able to take firm control of second place. In the end it was between the Saints and Huddersfield, but Adkins’ side proved too strong and were deservedly promoted. The club is set up perfectly for Championship football and should be able to hold their own with little addition to the playing staff. Playmaker Adam Lallana and emerging talent Alex Chamberlain were both massively important for the club this season and the Saints are sure to face a battle to hold onto them. Indeed Lallana has become somewhat of a talisman for the club and they always seem to do better when he is in the side, rarely losing. Striker Rickie Lambert had a modest season by his recent standards, but still hit 21 league goals, which was enough to finish 3rd in the chart. He will be keen to test himself against a higher standard of defence, but Adkins is likely to bring in another striker over the summer.
