Football Season Review

№18: Tamworth

Tamworth ensured another season in the Blue Square Premier after an ambivalent campaign in which they started off rather impressively but tailed off quite badly after the turn of the year. Marcus Law was appointed new manager in the summer after the dramatic late escape from the drop on the last day of the previous season. Law has impressed when in charge of neighbours Kettering and soon got down to work in assembling a pretty impressive squad of young players along with some old heads like Iyseden Christie and Patrick Kanyuka. Paul Green arrived from Lincoln to solidify the defence, promising keeper Jonathan Hedge stepped in from Halifax and former LA Galacy striker Kyle Patterson was signed up too. And indeed the Lambs were off to a pretty good start, getting some good results under their belt and playing neat football too. They were still not pulling any trees but were comfortable in the upper half of the table, claiming the scalps of York and Tamworth, whom they beat 4:0, in the first couple of months of the season. Law. However, a decent FA Cup run was gathering momentum towards the end of 2011 and indeed a dramatic last-minute win over Gateshead set up a dream third-round tie against Everton. Tamworth gave a really good account of themselves on that day and lost 2:0 at Goodison Park while making it tough for the Premier League side. However, with all the focus set to this game, the form in the league fell completely and indeed Law's men started to slide down the table in the first weeks of 2012. They picked one point from seven games before surprisingly beating Cambridge away from home and then holding tittle chasers Fleetwood to a draw. Yet, the team never really looked motivated to go on another decent run of form and the overall despondency and disinterest around the place set in. The Midlands club failed to win any of their last 14 games in the league and at one point went five consecutive games without scoring. In the end, they limped over the finishing line, their only noteworthy performance being a comeback from two goals down to claim a draw against Southport, but it was still a good season with one particular game that will remain forever etched in the memories of the fans.
