Football Season Review

Champions: Toronto FC

2017 would be a record breaking year for Toronto FC, as they became the first Canadian side in history to claim an MLS Cup title. In a rematch of last year’s final, Toronto would edge past the Seattle Sounders by 2 goals to nil, with the reds undoubtedly fully deserving of the victory and their crown. Winning 20 of their 34 regular season games, Toronto would set a new MLS record for most points accumulated in a single season, totalling 69 by November. Greg Vanney’s men would too prove to be a strong force in front of goal. With Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco leading the line, the Canadian side would prove to be unstoppable going forward, firing home a total of 74 regular season goals. Both Giovinco and Altidore would combine for 31 of those goals, with the dynamic duo also recording 12 assists between them. Greg Vanney’s tactics certainly have to be praised, with his innovative 3-5-2 formation working a treat all season. Justin Morrow and Steven Beitashour would provide pace down the flanks, while Michael Bradley and Victor Vasquez commanded the centre of midfield. Indeed, many pundits have even claimed that under Vanney’s leadership, Toronto should be considered perhaps the best side in MLS history. Losing just 1 regular season home game all campaign, and suffering just 4 losses on the road, Toronto’s all round form was absolutely exceptional. With a few players, such as Benoit Cheyrou and Armando Cooper, having already departed the club, Toronto will hope to add a few fresh faces to the squad to ensure that they have enough depth to re-challenge for their title. Drew Moor’s decision to sign a contract extension with the club is already a positive step heading into 2018. Some additional cover up front and in the midfield would additionally be much welcomed.
