Promoted as the top team in the Championship last season. The top 3 sides in the second tier were split by just 2 points so it wasn’t until the final day that Birmingham knew they were going up. The last time they played in the WSL was the 2021/22 season. Lost 6 games, 2 more than the next two teams in the standings, but the 46 goals scored in 22 rounds were the league’s highest and this brought them the most wins – 14. Lily Crosthwaite scored 8 goals, wingers Sarri and Leidhammar had 7 each. All 3 are staying put and expected to play often in attack. Amy Merricks has been in charge for the past 2 years. She is an old-school coach that encourages her players to be physical. No team scored more goals in the Championship via set pieces than Birmingham (7). More of the same can be expected in the top flight too. To add aerial threat and much better defensive stability signed 3 top class centre-backs Veteran Turner was also made the team captain. Experienced playmaker Naaslund is also a great new addition. Her ability to retain possession under pressure could prove very valuable. With the addition of some quality players with rich top flight experience Birmingham promise to be competitive as they try to establish in the division.
