Football Season Review

№8: Altach

Altach are coming from a season that they started with so much promise, only to eventually finish 8th in the Bundesliga. Guided by Klaus Schmidt, who took over in the summer, they started their league campaign well and also enjoyed an excellent European adventure, which saw them eliminate Chikura, Dinamo Brest and Gent before being edged out by Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv, who they gave a good run for their money. With the early signs looking so promising, the fans were hoping for another Bundesliga finish that would result in qualifying for Europe, but it soon became apparent that the Altachers were not really up to the task, with their home form declining over form and their away form never being great to begin with. Just like a year earlier, Altach once again had plenty of injury problems and had to deal with a growing injury list, having spent the majority of the spring season missing seven or more players through injuries. It became apparent as early as February that Altach would not be playing in Europe next season and, with St.Polten pretty much already relegated at that stage, the Altachers spent the final three months of the season playing pretty much only for pride. One cannot help but wonder if their league campaign would have been better had it no been for their injury issues, but their board were not in a mood for excuses come the end of the season and announced that Klaus Schmidt will not be in charge next time around. It remains to be seen if their new manager will manage to help them to regain their moment following what was certainly a disappointing season.
