Football Season Review

№3: Arsenal

Arsenal once again achieved the minimum required objective this season. Arsene Wenger guided his side to another top four finish and it is fair to say there was never any point throughout the season when that looked in doubt. The Gunners looked closer to the finished article than in recent seasons - but in truth they were never really genuine title contenders. At the half way stage they were a massive thirteen points behind leaders Chelsea - and ended the season twelve adrift. Summer signing Alexis Sanchez was nothing short of sensational. The emergence of Francis Coquelin in the second half of the season was a surprise considering Wenger was happy for him to be on loan up until then. Arsenal lifted the FA Cup following the demolition of Aston Villa in the Wembley showpiece. Despite their progress over the last twelve months, it is still difficult to see them being in contention next season without a couple of top signings - and even then Wenger's stubbornness may prevent it. The club have money to spend but their cautiousness may again mean they miss out on the top players.
