Football Season Review

№7: Southampton

Despite finishing a remarkable eighth in the table in 2013/14, there was plenty of doom and gloom ahead of the new season for Southampton. A number of key players had been sold and a new manager (Ronald Koeman) was at the helm. Just a few weeks before the start of the season, Koeman was still waiting on a number of transfers to be completed and things were starting to look a little bleak. That all changed very quickly with five or six astute signings that offered great value for money and the Saints started the season on fire. At the half way point they were an impressive fourth in the table despite losing four on the trot before Christmas. A lack of depth in the squad ultimately caught up with them, but all in all everyone associated with the club will be delighted with their seventh placed finish. Centre back Jose Fonte was a rock in defence. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane all impressed going forward - but were perhaps not as consistent as they could have been.
