Football Season Review

№6: Charlton Athletic

It was a season in which Charlton did significantly better than in the previous one and made the play-offs, but ultimately failed to win promotion after falling to a 2:0 aggregate defeat in the hands of Shrewsbury. The Addics actually did reasonably well to finish inside the top six, given that they had a campaign plagued by off-field problems, as the current owners have unsuccessfully been trying to sell the club and did no make any significant funds available for new signings over the course of the season. Charlton did reasonably well in the majority of the first half of the season, but a combination of injury problems and frustration in the transfer window saw them start to slip down the table. Manager Karl Robinson made his frustration with the off-field situation blatantly clear and opted to leave the club in mid March in order to become the new manager of Oxford. The Addics seemed all set to miss out on a play-off place and named Lee Bowyer their caretaker boss, but their rookie manager performed above expectation and oversaw his side improve and book a play-off place with a game to spare. Despite not playing bad, the Addics were beaten by Shrewsbury in their play-off semi-final clash and now have a big summer coming ahead of them. The big question, of course, is whether the club will finally be sold, and the other big question is who the new manager will be. Bowyer has made his interest in the position public, but there have been no suggestions regarding whether or not he will get the job on a full time basis.
