Football Season Review

№8: Portsmouth

League Two champions last season, Portsmouth entered their season of return to League One hoping to not spend too much time in the third tier and continue their journey up the divisions. They were dealt a blow during the previous summer, as their manager Paul Cook was tempted away with Wigan, so Kenny Jackett inherited the side that won League Two and was trusted with the task to guide the side to back-to-back promotion. Pompey did show signs of promise under their new manager but were terribly inconsistent throughout the course of the season - it took them 12 games to complete their first set of back-to-back wins and did not win more than three in a row until early April. It was that run that got them back into the play-off reckoning and they were below the top six only on goal-difference with a month of the league season remaining, but they went on to collect only two points from their next five games and had their play-off hopes ended with one game left to play. Despite the failure to deliver promotion, Jackett's position is not under threat. The general consensus of the board seems to be that Pompey have done reasonably well in their season of return to the third tier and Jackett seems like he will be looking to retain the majority of the current squad, as only four players have left the club at the end of the season. With Blackburn and Wigan winning promotion this season, Portsmouth will be easily the biggest club in the division next time around and, with a few smartly selected signings, could even challenge for the division title next time around.
