Football Season Review

№19: Coritiba FC

Coritiba lasted only one 1 year at top flight, after their promotion in the end of 2019. It was not hard to predict they were about to have a difficult campaign, looking at their fragile squad in the beginning of the season. The season just confirmed their general weaknesses. Team started with 37-years old Rafinha as their biggest hope for talent. And the winger got seriously injured in early weeks. There was a total of 49 players used during the season, with many arrivals and departures almost every week until window closed. 4 defeats in a row was not a promising start, but there were some (few) moments of joy. A 3 games undefeated in late August and an away classy 3-1 win over Palmeiras gave the fans some hopes. Generally, however, the team was never capable of holding on to these few moments. From round 20 to 36, ‘Coxa’ won one game only, having picked 9 points in the period. Relegation was never going to be avoided. Centre-half Sabino was by far the standout of the team, the only one who had a positive campaign, having ended the season deeply valued. Too bad he was just a loan in. Hugo Moura had a good impact when arrived in September; Robson had a good scoring run in September and October. Team is used to the up and down succession and has proved before to know how to pick up the pieces and put out a good performance in Série B, the following year. There is some young talent that may give some hopes to the fans.
