Football Season Review

№12: Crawley Town

It was a season of ups and downs from Crawley Town, as they claimed a top-half finish in League 2. Manager John Yems is a rare character in modern-day football. His style is certainly eccentric and there was plenty of excitement on offer at the Broadfield Stadium. The story of their season largely revolves around striker Max Watters. He impressed whilst playing against the Red Devils in a pre-season friendly for Maidstone United and was soon snapped up. He made his mark almost immediately and had bagged 16 goals by the time the January transfer window had opened. Having spent barely five months in West Sussex he was off to Cardiff City in a £1million deal. The money certainly helped the club deal with the financial consequences of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile on the pitch they played Premier League Leeds United off the park in an F.A. Cup tie. The 3-0 win was undoubtedly the high point of the season. Glimpses of that form was shown in the league but all too often they disappointed, shipping goals all over the place. Goalkeeper Glenn Morris missed just one game but wasn’t as reliable as usual. Jordan Tunnicliffe was the defensive mainstay whilst striker Tom Nichols finished just one goal behind Watters' tally. He looks like following him out of the door this summer and Yems will be on the search for more hidden gems.
