Football Season Review

Champions: Accrington Stanley

Accrington Stanley enjoyed the most successful season in their history after being crowned League Two Champions under the expert tutelage of manager John Coleman. The self-proclaimed club that would not die were reformed in 1968 but it is Coleman which overseen their transformation since being appointed back in 1998. He had led them to three promotions but it is the fourth which stands out as his greatest achievement to date. Last summer followed a similar pattern with several influential players leaving for pastures new but he followed his tried and tested plan of recruiting hungry players with something to prove. The most notable addition was striker Kayden Jackson, who provided the perfect foil for striker Billy Kee in attack. They made a steady start to the league campaign, losing just two of their opening ten matches and spent most of the autumn in the top three. They suffered a slump heading into Christmas, winning just once in seven games and Coleman admitted he was worried where the next win was coming from. His fears proved unfounded and their form in 2018 was absolutely outstanding. They went on a 15-match unbeaten run, winning 13 and drawing two, conceding just seven goals, which saw them overtake favourites Luton Town as they climbed to the top of the table and were crowned worthy Champions. Coleman was able to rely on a settled side after Christmas, which was one of the reasons for their success. Defender Mark Hughes and midfielder Seamus Conneely were the heartbeat of the team whilst winger Sean McConville provided the creative spark. Billy Kee finished as leading goalscorer with 25 goals and was voted as the League Two player of the season. They will face a real challenge in League One next season but have the stability to survive.
