Football Season Review

№19: Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town had a mixed season with success in two cup competitions but a disappointing league campaign which ended with a 19th place finish under manager Darren Way. Way has failed to win over those Glovers fans who remained faithful following back-to-back relegations and a dreadful end to the previous season certainly didn’t help. The departures of key trio in Alex Lacey, Kevin Dawson and Matty Dolan were further blows. They were able to keep hold of player of the season Otis Khan but suffered the humiliation of an 8-2 defeat away at title favourites Luton Town on the opening day of the season. They responded with a 3-2 home win over eventual Champions Accrington Stanley the following weekend but were unable to find any form and were hovering above the drop zone at the turn of the year. January proved to be a pivotal month for the club after being drawn at home against Premier League giants Manchester United in an F.A. Cup fourth round tie. They were beaten 2-0 by Jose Mourinho’s men but the financial reward had allowed Way the opportunity to strengthen his squad with the additions of goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, defender Shaun Donnellan, midfielder Lewis Wing and striker Alex Fisher. They lost out on a trip to Wembley to Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy but just about their heads above water thanks to a remarkable 6-2 win away at play-off chasers Coventry City in Easter Monday. They failed to win any of their last eight league matches to finish just three points above the drop zone. Otis Khan completely lost his form in the second half of the season whilst striker Francois Zoko finished as leading goalscorer again with 15 goals. Full-back Tom James was voted as player of the season and he is just one of a number of players that could be set to leave Huish Park this summer.
