Football Season Review

№8: Getafe

Getafe may have been a newly promoted side, but they finished eighth and came very close to qualifying for Europe. Their points tally of 55 was the second best in their history, so it has been a very successful campaign for the team from southern Madrid. The key to Getafe’s success is coach Jose Bordalas. He took over midway through last season when the team was second bottom of the second division and he led them to promotion, before overseeing a very impressive campaign this season too. His style of football is certainly not attractive, but it is effective. Getafe are an aggressive and hard-working team, one who have committed the most fouls in the division and picked up the most yellow cards. They defend deep and as a unit in a 4-4-2 set-up and for this reason they conceded just 33 goals, the third fewest in all of LaLiga. As for their attacking plan, it’s as simple as getting the ball up to target man Jorge Molina as quickly as possible and hoping he or his attacking sidekick Angel Rodriguez can do something with it. Getafe have also benefitted from a very impressive home form. They’ve only lost six home games this season, each of them by just one goal and five of them against teams above them in the league table. Their league position has also been boosted by a strong end to the season, when they made a real push to qualify for Europe. Even if they weren’t able to pull it off this time around, the future looks bright for them. They’ve renewed Bordalas’ contract until 2020 and they should be able to keep most of the squad together, as they have few individual stars and, therefore, few players who are wanted by other clubs.
