Football Season Review

Champions: Real Madrid

Following two poor league campaigns in a row and a terrible pre-season, Real Madrid performed when it mattered most by winning the 2019/20 LaLiga title, finishing five points ahead of Barcelona. They also won the mid-season Super Cup. After a so-so start, where it was very tight with Barcelona, Real Madrid wrestled control of the title race by drawing the first Clasico at the Camp Nou and then winning the second one at home. Even though they were behind Barcelona when going in to the coronavirus pause, there was confidence that they still had a great chance since their run-in was easier. And so it proved, as they won 10 out of 10 after returning to clinch the title with a round to spare. The key to their success was their spine, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, centre-back Sergio Ramos, defensive midfielder Casemiro and striker Karim Benzema all had their best seasons individually in some time. The entire defence was solid and Real Madrid conceded just 25 goals, their best defensive numbers since LaLiga seasons had 38 fixtures. Even with so many injuries in attack, Benzema scored enough goals and scored decisive goals. On 10 occasions this LaLiga campaign, Benzema scored the opening goal of the game. Even when he wasn’t scoring, somebody else would step up and Real Madrid finished the LaLiga season with 21 different scorers. They only reached the quarters in the Copa del Rey, but they’re still in the Champions League and have that in August, while their planning for next season will be based on keeping this core together and finally getting Eden Hazard fit.
