Football Season Review

№9: Valencia

Valencia have had a very poor campaign, missing out on Europe and failing to defend their Copa del Rey crown. There are many reasons for it, but the main one is that they sacked their very successful coach Marcelino after just three matches. He went not because of poor results, but because of a dispute with ownership. Albert Celades came in and had a very tough job convincing this squad that was loyal to Marcelino. The league form was poor, but Valencia had some success in the Champions League by winning a group that contained Ajax and Chelsea, even if they crashed out vs Atalanta in the last 16. Overall, Valencia were in mid-table for most of the LaLiga season. They only spent eight total weeks inside the European spots, so can’t have many complaints about ultimately missing out. There really wasn’t much for Valencia to be happy about this season, but the form of the young Ferran Torres was one bright spot. Even that could be seen as a negative, though, since they can’t get him to sign a new contract and it expires in 2021. There are many complicated contractual situations like that at the club and they also need to find a new coach as Celades has been sacked. There is a lot of work to do at Valencia to get this club moving in the right direction again.
