Football Season Review

№8: Getafe

Getafe were having such a good 2019/20 campaign, but they really struggled after the coronavirus break and missed out on European qualification. Before the break, they were sitting in fifth and were level on points with fourth-placed Real Sociedad, so were once again challenging for Champions League qualification after finishing fifth the year before. That fifth placed finish had put them in the 2019/20 Europa League and they did so well, even knocking out Ajax to reach the last 16. They exited very early in the Copa del Rey, but their exploits on the continent had made this one of their best seasons ever. Then the coronavirus pause happened. Getafe lost all momentum and their squad – the third oldest in LaLiga – really seemed to struggle with games coming so frequently. Getafe also played a physical style under coach Jose Bordalas and that was hard to maintain too. Plus, they even lost a few players towards the end as they couldn’t agree to extend expiring contracts past June 30th. In the end, this meant Getafe slipped all the way down to eight and they have not qualified for Europe next season. They are still in the ongoing Europa League campaign and have a tie vs Inter in August, but they’ll need a mini reboot going in to next season given their aging squad. What’s worse, they might even lose coach Jose Bordalas as he is a man in demand.
