Football Season Review

№11: Athletic Bilbao

By winning three and drawing three of their first six matches, including an opening night victory over Barcelona, Athletic Club started 2019/20 so well. However, their league campaign ended up fizzling out, even if they have the excitement of reaching the Copa del Rey final. Overall, considering the failure to qualify for Europe and the successful Copa del Rey run, this has been a fine season for Athletic Club. Not great. Not bad. Following their bright start, they’ve been so-so almost all campaign. They were fine at home. They were fine away. They were fine before the coronavirus break. They were fine after the coronavirus break. They were even the team with the closest goal difference to zero, with +3. Basically, it has been so-so all the way through and that’s why they’ve finished firmly in mid-table. There have been some standout performers as Unai Simon has really developed as a goalkeeper and Iker Muniain and Raul Garcia have had two of their best seasons in a long time. The first XI is generally really good, but they do need some depth and that will be hard to do given their Basque-only transfer policy. For now, they can look forward to playing the 2019/20 Copa del Rey final, whenever that does get played. It could yet become a season to remember if they win that.
