Football Season Review

№11: Hamilton Academical

Hamilton Academical secured their Scottish Premiership survival only thanks to a play-off victory over Championship side Dundee United. In what was a difficult season for the Accies and saw them struggle to ever move away from the bottom sides battling for survival, the scenes of celebration as they stayed up showed the importance placed on remaining in the Scottish Premiership. With only one away victory in the league throughout the entire season, it’s not hard to see where Accies struggled. It took a last day victory over Dundee just to prevent automatic relegation following a run of four defeats following the bottom six split. In the cups they offered little as they were ejected from the League Cup by lower league Greenock Morton back in August, and hammered 6-0 by Rangers in the Scottish Cup. They had problems in front of goal throughout the season, with Rakish Bingham and Alex D’Acol swapping in and out for one another but with neither managing to hold down a firm place until Bingham seemed to end the season as favourite. Their top scorer for the season was Ali Crawford but he finished the year poorly as well, struggling to find form since the winter break. Martin Canning has already acted to try and bring in fresh blood in anticipation for the new season with David Templeton signing and playing the last few games of the season as he got back to fitness, with his performances suggesting he could be a key player next year. They had already decided to stick by Canning regardless of what league they were in in the upcoming season but fan patience won’t last long if they struggle so much again.
