Football Season Review

№10: Hellas Verona

The 2019/2020 campaign was a bright one for Hellas Verona as, just promoted from the Serie B, they made 9th place thanks to the impressive football offered by coach Juric and his boys. Thus, the man at the helm was confirmed for the new campaign but he was handed a completely different squad from the one he could count on only a few months before. With the likes of Amrabat, Rrahmani, Kumbulla and Pessina, among the others, gone, Juric found himself with a much weaker squad but he succeeded working another miracle, leading Hellas Verona to another top 10 finish. It was far from easy, though, especially considering that Hellas Verona had to make do without a real striker for the whole campaign. None of the forwards present in the squad managed to score more than 3 goals, in particular, Kalinic was injured most of the time while Lasagna, arrived in January, failed to make a difference. In fact, Juric’s boys did some great defending for the whole first half of the campaign, losing 5 out of the initial 19 games and only rarely conceding more than 1 per game. They remained in contention for a European spot at least until week 25 but, after that, they had to face a slow and inexorable fall. Between weeks 26 and 38, Hellas Verona won only once, away at Cagliari, while collecting 8 defeats and drawing 4 out of the final 5 games. By then, they had lost all the brightness that had characterized the initial months of their campaign. Zaccagni undoubtedly was the key player during the first part of the campaign but he ran out of energy way too soon and even Barak and Lazovic were too inconsistent while Veloso missed out too often. Dimarco, on loan from Inter, did well both in the back 3 and on the left while scoring 5 and assisting 5, thus proving fundamental. What future lies ahead of Hellas Verona is a mystery now, with the coach likely leaving together with most of their best players.
