Football Season Review

Champions: Milan

At the beginning of the season, coach Allegri's team was not considered to be one of the favourite for the final success in Serie A. Little had changed in the squad during the transfer season but for the arrivals of “Midas” Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Moreover, the new coach seemed to be still too inexpert. And the initial weeks seemed to confirm this. Milan were stuttering both in Serie A and in the Champions League. Then, in November, things started to change. Milan succeeded reaching the top of the table thanks to a winning streak and from then on until the end of the season they dominated the league. The key match was the return game against Inter: Milan made it clear that they wanted to win and they could not be stopped. Ibrahimovic was fundamental with his goals and his assists at least until the Christmas break. With the passing of time, the other strikers, Pato, Robinho and even the newly arrived Cassano managed to replace him successfully, since he started being banned quite often. Milan won the Scudetto thanks to a solid defence, where Thiago Silva was the indisputable leader, with only 24 goals conceded, and to a brilliant attack, which was second only to Inter's. Milan's play, to tell the truth, was not always very spectacular. Actually, the other way round. It was too cautious and relied too much on the stars' creativity upfront. The midfield highly benefited from the arrival of Boateng and, later, Van Bommel: Gattuso, Ambrosini, Seedorf and Pirlo have all made their time and now need some valid replacements.
