Football Season Review

№10: Genoa

After the umpteenth pharaonic transfer campaign, even this season Genoa were at last expected to make the quantum leap that would have brought them among the top Italian teams. Coach Gasperini had been entrusted a whole new group of promising and experienced players but they did not seem to be able to give his team what it was needed and so, soon enough, it became clear that Genoa would have been surfing a long way from the top standings of the Serie A. As a matter of fact, Genoa were never very brilliant, unlike their recent past, and they actually got far too close to the danger zone. This eventually led to Gasperini's sacking. The coach was thus replaced by Ballardini who could eventually count on a few new players, among them Konko, Kucka, Floro Flores and Antonelli, arrived in January, during the reopening of the transfer season. Genoa did not improve particularly but, at least, they became somehow more consistent and so they managed getting out of the mazes of the struggle to avoid relegation. However, Genoa curiously started improving a bit only towards the end of the season when the members of the squad started playing for a re-confirm. Then, Genoa became a sort of drifting mine that contributed heavily to Sampdoria's relegation. To Genoa's supporters' delight. And they eventually secured a place in the top ten. Palacio and Floro Flores certainly gave Genoa an higher offensive weight when they started playing together while Konko and Kucka evidently strengthened the midfield. Players like Chico, Zuculini, Palladino, Rafinha and Paloschi were all far from impressive. While Eduardo at some point was even disastrous.
